Why Is Herbal Tea So Popular?

July 04, 2026

If you've ever wondered why herbal tea has become so popular, you're definitely not alone.

As someone who drinks herbal tea almost every day, I've noticed something interesting. More and more of my friends are reaching for herbal teas too. I think it's because people are becoming much more conscious about looking after their health, and they're searching for simple, natural ways to support their wellbeing.

That was certainly my journey.

I've always been fascinated by anything that promotes good health, so discovering the world of herbal teas felt like a natural next step. The more I learned, the more intrigued I became. Then I started experiencing some of the benefits for myself. Whether it was soothing a sore throat, calming an upset tummy, or simply helping me unwind after a long day, herbal teas quickly became a staple in my home.

Before long, I found myself telling everyone about them!

So why am I such a champion of herbal tea?

Because herbs are incredible.

They're naturally rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other beneficial plant compounds that help nourish the body and support overall wellbeing.

One of the things I love most is that herbs don't just focus on one part of the body. Many work by supporting whole body systems, like your digestive or immune system, helping your body do what it was designed to do.

Need something comforting when you've got a cough or sore throat? There's probably a herbal tea for that.

Feeling bloated or have an upset stomach? There's likely a herb that has traditionally been used for that too.

Some herbs seem to work quite quickly, while others are traditionally enjoyed over time to support longer-term wellness, such as maintaining healthy blood sugar levels, supporting hormonal balance, easing joint discomfort, or helping the body manage inflammation.

And here's something we don't talk about enough... Many herbs also support emotional wellbeing.

Certain herbal teas are traditionally used to help you relax, improve sleep, reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, lift your mood, and even support healthy brain function. Sometimes, sitting quietly with a warm cup of herbal tea is exactly what the mind and body need.

So, what are some of the benefits of drinking herbal tea?

Herbal teas may help:

  • Support relaxation
  • Aid healthy digestion
  • Keep you hydrated
  • Support your immune system
  • Promote better sleep
  • Provide a gentle, natural energy boost
  • Support your overall wellbeing, one mindful sip at a time

Let's Talk About Nettles...

Now here's a plant that most people try to avoid! I have loads of nettles growing in my garden.

At first, I couldn't wait to get rid of them. Every time I brushed against them, I'd end up scratching my arms. I even bought bottles of white vinegar, poured them all over the area after mowing them down...

Guess what happened? They came back.

Not only did they come back—they came back stronger! That's when I started wondering...

What makes nettles sting in the first place?

It turns out that nettles are simply protecting themselves.

Their leaves and stems are covered in tiny hollow hairs called trichomes. Think of them as nature's microscopic needles. When you brush against them, the tips snap off, pierce your skin, and release a mixture of naturally occurring compounds that cause that familiar stinging sensation. Pretty clever, really! (According to the Woodland Trust.)

But here's where the story gets interesting...

The very plant we spend so much time trying to avoid is actually one of nature's nutritional powerhouses.

Nettles are packed with vitamins A, C and K, along with minerals like calcium, iron and magnesium. For generations, they've been used in traditional herbal practices to support healthy inflammatory responses, healthy blood sugar levels, seasonal allergies, urinary health, prostate health and healthy skin.

Isn't that amazing?

The same plant that causes so many people to itch has traditionally been used to help support the body's response to seasonal allergies.

Nature has a funny way of surprising us!

Thanks to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, nettles have also been traditionally used to support healthy skin and may help soothe conditions like eczema, acne and psoriasis.

And here's my favourite fact...

Did you know you can actually eat nettles? Yes, really!

Nettle soup has been enjoyed for centuries in countries like Ireland, the UK, Finland, Scandinavia, Iran and parts of Eastern Europe. The young shoots are harvested during spring and early summer before being cooked into a delicious, nutritious soup.

Who would have thought that one of the most feared plants in the garden could also end up on your dinner table?

I absolutely love discovering little surprises like this in nature.
